>> John Grewe sped out to the holeshot as he immediately began to stretch the early lead. He held an advantage over Gregory Pamart as well as his main rival, Barry Carsten. Grewe laid down a scolding pace early on and forced the other podium contenders to hang it out if they wanted to stay in contention for the lead. His smooth, calculated style worked to perfection on the freshly groomed track as he appeared to float from corner to corner with relative ease. Grewe held a 3.5 second gap over Pamart as they soared over the finish line jump for the second time, Carsten was a further 4 seconds back as the battle for 2nd place was one of the closest on the track. The New Jersey native on the Suzuki zigged and zagged all over the Florida terrain in an attempt to find a passing lane around the French-Canadian. Meanwhile, the #70 Babbits Kawasaki continued to disap- pear into the distance. Grewe cruised to the checkered flag and took his third motocross championship with a pair of 1st place finishes. The battle for 2nd came down to the penul- timate corner as Carsten used an outside line in order to propel himself ahead of Pamart, securing 2nd overall in the process with Pamart coming home in 3rd.
