“I’M THANKFUL I GET TO RIDE THAT R1 AND I’M GLAD TO GET ANOTHER WIN IN THE BOOKS FOR THE TEAM.”
Hayes began to make a charge back towards the front of the field, but he made a mistake and ran
off the track on the fourth lap, therefore demoting him to twelfth position. He piloted his YZF-R1 in a heroic ride to fight his way back through the field, putting himself back in contention for the podium with about five laps to go. Hayes was clocking lap times faster than any of the other riders in front of him, determined to make amends for his mistake after overtaking nine riders in order to earn a shot at the podium. He made his way back to second position with only a couple of laps to go, but
a heated battle with Cameron Beaubier and Bobby Fong on the final lap moved him back to fourth place, barely missing out on the podium by less than one tenth of a second. In the second race, Hayes managed a better jump when the lights went out and he was able to command the lead ahead of his teammate throughout the first four laps. Beaubier found his way past and attempted to control the pace, but the pressure from behind forced him into a mistake at turn one and put the lead back in the hands of the four-time champion. It was smooth sailing from that point forward for the fan favorite as he consistently crept away from the chasing duo of Yoshimura Suzuki riders, clocking incredibly consistent lap times on the way to his sixty-first career Superbike win.
