Epstein dropped to eighth due to his fumble but quickly climbed the ranks as

other riders made even bigger mistakes. In a battle with Steve Mages, Epstein fell back into fifth with two laps to go. Epstein battled to catch Mages in order to transfer. But he is passed by Politelli with two laps to go. In the final lap Epstein fights to catch Politelli; as the race nears the final corner Epstein was passed by Reis and narrowly misses his ticket to the main.
