Buskirk put in the fastest lap of the race on the second lap as he made the pass for the lead, beginning to build a gap ahead of the ensuing riders. Mayhugh got involved in a battle with fellow Oklahoman, Eric Edwards, on the following lap and the two rubbed blue plastic in contention for the 2nd position. Edwards was able to work his way past his statesman and the the two of them rode consistent lap times all the way until the checkered flag.
