He closed down the gap to the lead with every passing lap, but he just ran out of time as he crossed the fin- ish line 4 tenths of a second behind New England’s Thomas. Johnson started in 2nd place and only lost the one position to the Utah native of Johnson; he put in stable lap times throughout the rest of the moto in order to claim the final spot on the podium as his own. The roles were reversed at the beginning of the second moto as Johnson pulled the holeshot and Thomas started the race in 4th. Johnson set a blistering pace at the front of the field and never looked back, riding his Cobra to an unchallenged victory.
