IMAGES/WONDERGOAT Operation Desert Storm was altered last minute due to torrential downpours, making this more of a
covert, swamp infested scheme, perfectly suited for a “Green” Beret, a.k.a. Joey Savatgy. As the gate fell for heat one, Savatgy managed to bob and weave through the enormous amount of fallen operatives in the opening turns, sitting inside the top four. Slamming Cooper Webb on lap one, Savage set his sights on Decotis and Alex Martin. With film vigorously swiping across the lens, Savatgy carefully placed his way into second, with now only Alex Martin standing between himself and the throne. The two were slushing their way through the ruin of terrain, when Martin washed the front wheel in an instant with two to go. Joey quietly took over reign, and held on for the heat win. The game face of Joey Savatgy was radiating through the Bell helmet of the Kawasaki rider, solemn and cold-hearted as they come. There was no need for games, nor pre-race antics, just him and the bike in unison.
The 250f began to scream as it was clicked into gear, body position into formality, and the pin would fall, Savatgy taking the opening stretch with ease. He would shove the field to the way side and lead the pack back into the stadium. With the crowd roaring, the rattle of the 250f became faint for mere seconds, as Savatgy seemed to grasp the moment of the present, and truly take it all in.
Albeit one early race hiccup, where he handed the lead to Colt Nichols for just a few short moments, the main was an immaculate real- ity for the camp Carmichael trainee. He flirted, ever so closely with the championship, going back and forth in the points standings to eventual winner, Cooper Webb; an idea, that prior to this weekend, seemed as a tad bit of a pipe dream to the Pro Circuit squad. Although he came up just a point short, with championship aroma stimulating his taste buds, the number 37 has no reason to hang
his head. The victory and effort he amounted was insurmountable, certainly giving him a boost of confidence for any future series he competes in.
