MASTERS 50+
JOHN GREWE / MOTOCROSS
When you think of normal adults in modern day society, once turning the age of 50, many are eyeing retirement, the accumulation of 401K funds, and the golf course. Never in their right mind, would the idea of racing a motorcycle, on an inherently dangerous outdoor course, filled with jumps, valleys, and grooves, sound appeal- ing. But, to guys like John Grewe, the typical life of 9-5, clocking in and out, was thrown out from the time they became an adult. They went after their dreams, chasing the idea of fun, each and every weekend, and it’s led them to this point
in their careers. Over fifty years of age, and still garnering the fire to compete all throughout the year. Grewe acted as a phenomenon yet again for the 2017 Winter Olympics, looking to contend for wins, every time he lined up behind the gate. This division was no different, as he pulled off
the line with feverish intent, charging into the first turn, and down the next straightaway seemingly tapped out. Carsten, his all too familiar partner sat just behind in the early going, yet Grewe decided to drop the hammer, throwing down a sub 2:00 laptime (1:57 to be exact), putting a hefty gap on the number 31 Suzuki rider. Once the gap had been placed, Grewe backed off just a tad, to keep the pace within his comfortable means. He would go on to secure the victory, his bike, straight as an arrow when soaring through the finish line
air. Carsten meanwhile would take second, and Edmond Nattermann, third. For round number
two, Grewe would hope to do the same thing. This time, Carsten felt a little more comfortable on the treacherous course, and it was easy to see, even with the naked eye. A mere second behind at the stripe, the number 31, Bayville, New Jersey native hounded grew, reminiscing on his days of the pro tour. A two-digit rider for numerous years, Carsten was no stranger to heated battles and long moto’s, so this measly four-lap sprint, was nothing but a walk in the park. However, when Carsten’s speed seemed to increase, so did Grewe’s as he hit the 1:59 mark with one lap to go. And that was all that was needed to elevate, as he would go on to claim yet another victory, and Carsten would be right behind. The two gentleman, with a classic hand- shake and pat on the back, congratulated each other after the race. Grewe had done it yet again, establishing himself as a force to be reckon with, and tough for any competitor to face, regardless of their age.
