Ty Masterpool enjoyed himself a great weekend of racing at the JS7 Freestone National in his home state of Texas. This week meant a lot to him because it marked the six-year anniversary of the passing of his older brother Jesse. With that in his mind, you know that each time Ty lined up on the gate this week he was going to give it a little extra for Jesse. Ty raced the Mini Sr 2 (12-14) class as well as both Supermini 1&2 classes. In only his second national race on a supermini, Ty held his own en route to solid finishes in
both classes. Bad starts may have hindered him from reaching his full potential in the results column but he would still come away with a seventh overall in Supermini 1 and a twelfth overall in Supermini 2. Those are some good finishes for only his second race in one of the most stacked classes in amateur motocross. The season is still early and you can expect Ty to only improve in those classes as the season pro- gresses. Ty saw much more success in the Mini Sr 2 (12-14) class. It is a class that he has plenty of experience in and that familiarity helped give him that boost to a second place overall. After getting second place to Max Miller in the heat race, Ty knew he had to give it all he had if he wanted to steal one away from Miller in the final moto. And when the gate dropped for that final moto, the fans along the fence got the start they wanted to see. Miller came around in the number one position with Masterpool locked in right behind. The stage was set for a showdown and the two riders began clicking off very similar lap times. With no change of position coming into the final lap, Masterpool knew he had one more chance to make a move. He threw down his fastest lap of the race on that last lap but it would not be enough, as Miller would hold onto the slim lead for the win and the championship. Masterpool came so close but he gave it absolutely everything he had and in the end that is all that really matters.
