New Signs About Subway Etiquette

The Metropolitan Transportation Agency is rolling out new signs about subway eti- quette. Last month, the agency reminded male straphangers in the new campaign to stop "man spreading" or sitting with their legs wide apart.
This time around, com- muters eating, clipping nails, taking up too much space and pole dancing are being targeted.
The signs are going up in 2,600 subway cars.
One of the signs reads:
"Keep Your Stuff To Your Self," aimed at anyone taking up too much room by placing their belong- ings in the seat next to them.
Others read: "It's A Subway Car, Not A Dining Car," aimed at people eating on the train; and, "Poles Are For Your Safety, Not Your Latest Routine," aimed at people using the poles to dance.
Lastly, "Everyone Wants To Look Their Best, But It's A Subway Car, Not A Restroom," aimed at those grooming them- selves particularly clip- ping their nails.
The 46-inch or 72-inch placards will be installed on 2,600 subway cars and plans are currently underway to add subway car announcements to the campaign. Additional campaigns will be creat- ed for buses and both the Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North Railroad. All of the topics and suggestions are intended to raise rider awareness of what they can do to create a better trip for everyone. The placards will be consis- tent reminders that cour- teous behavior is in everybody's best interest for a more comfortable trip.
