TellAmerica It's Great!
Heather Mullinix
Good neighbors are key to loving where you live. From that friendly wave as you pass by on your morning walk with the dog to offering a little help with a project when you bit off more than you can handle, or just seeing you’ve had a bad week and taking care of a chore you despise — like mowing — neigh- bors have the ability to lift our spirits when we’re feeling down.
Nationally, I think it’s safe to say Americans have been going through a rough patch. Our presidential election has become little more than a bad reality televi- sion show. And just when you think it can’t get any worse, there’s another debate.
So I was very thankful last week when our national neighbors to the north, Oh Canada, offered a few kind words to lift our collective spir- its with #tellAmericaitsgreat.
The Facebook page says, “With so much negativity in the news these days, we thought it was time to put a posi- tive message out there.
For our friends south of the border: we want to let you know that we think you’re already great.”
Why do they think we’re so awesome?
•We invented the Internet.
•We’re going to get humanity to Mars.
•Our national park sys- tem protects some of the most beautiful places on earth.
•Our diversity and openness.
•We give more than $250 billion is given to charitable causes each year.
•We’re wonderful, warm and accommodating.
•When things are tough, we fight to make them better.
•The disability rights movement is amazing.
•We’re infectious and entertaining.
•Our music, from jazz to country to bluegrass to pop and beyond.
•Our political and social activism.
•We dream big.
•Our quest to be the best creates the best.
•We forge new paths.
•We’re a land of oppor- tunity where anybody can be anything they want to be.
•Our vibrancy and diversity and the idea we can all live together.
“We all love you and we think you’ve always been great,” says one.
Are they saying we’ve
got it all figured out? Nope. We all know we have very serious issues facing us — from world tensions to tensions at home. And yes, those serious issues deserve — demand — serious attention not just from those elected, but from every single one of us.
But it’s nice to hear that others in the world think we’re great, that we con- tinue to be a force for good in the world around us. From our arts and entertainment (except for “Glitter.” We’re sorry, world. Really, we are), to our technology, our civil- rights achievements and our diversity, we’ve had an impact world wide.
The site said, “The list of America’s positive influ- ence and impact was impressive and when you stop to consider it, you start to realize just how much good they bring to our everyday lives.”
Is there more we need to do? Obviously.
Election day is Nov. 8 — two weeks from today. As we near the end of one of the most con- tentious and divisive elections in my memory, I’m reminded of a quote from Ronald Reagan.
“If we love our country, we should also love our countrymen,” he said.
Our neighbors to the north have reminded us that we’re pretty great. Take a moment and smile about that. I know I did. (By the way, in addition to being pretty good neighbors and remind- ing us that the USA is pretty darn great, they also gave the world peanut butter and the Java computer lan- guage. Comedian Dan Aykroyd also hails from
Canada. These are just a few of the reasons I think Canada is pretty great, too).
After basking in the glow of those nice words, take a moment and think about your own neigh- bors — those you inter- act with daily and those who are a bit farther away. We’re all neigh- bors in this country, and I hope that we can all come together in the end — regardless of who the prevailing can- didate is — and work together to continue doing great things in our homes, our communi- ties, our country and around the world.
In 1958, John F. Kennedy, 35th president of the United States, spoke to the Loyola College Alumni Banquet and offered these words that seem even more appropriate today than they did more than 50 years ago.
“Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past — let us accept our own responsibility for the future.”
