We might Have the Day Wrong
The real date of independence is not as clear cut as we've made it seem. The colonies, after all, actually voted to accept the Declaration of Independence on July 2nd (and they didn't actually sign it until August 2nd). For this
reason, John Adams believed the national holiday would be two days earlier than it is now.
"The Second Day of July 1776, will be the most memorable Epocha, in the History of America," Adams wrote on July 3, 1776 in a letter to his wife. "It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more," he said.
So, what happened? While the Declaration of Independence was initially accepted on the 2nd of July, it was only adopted on the 4th, and this ended up
being the date commemorated.
It's not always a good Day for Presidents Three presidents have died on the Fourth of July. Yes, three. James Monroe, Thomas Jefferson and John Adams all died on Independence Day, with the last two actually dying on the same day in 1826. Interestingly enough, the two had been rivals in life, and Adams' last words were: “Thomas Jefferson lives!” However, much like the date of future Independence Day celebrations, he was wrong about this, as Jefferson had in fact been the first
of the two to pass away, dying nearly five hours earlier.
It Wasn't always a national Holiday
While the first Fourth of July party was held at the White House in 1801, the day itself was not declared a national holi-
day until 1941. The city of Boston, however, was an exception, designating the Fourth a city-wide holiday way back in 1783!
Lady Liberty arrives
France presented the United States with its largest physical birthday present on July 4th, 1884. The gift? The Statue of Liberty herself. Of course, given her immense size (she is 151-feet tall), she was shipped from Paris in pieces, which then had to be assembled. The work took four months, but President Grover Cleveland did not formally dedicate the statue
until two years later, in 1886.
