Lobbyist says Roundup Is Safe - But Refuses To Drink It
PARIS, March 27 (UPI) -
Lobbyist Patrick Moore told a French TV inter- viewer Monsanto's Roundup weed killer is safe to drink -- but he subsequently declined an offered glass.
Moore told an interviewer for French station Canal+ that glysophate, the active ingredient in Roundup, is not respon- sible for rising cancer rates in Argentina.
The World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer announced last week the results of a study that concluded the chemical is "probably carcinogenic to humans."
Moore countered the
chemical is not harmful, even when directly ingested.
"You can drink a whole quart of it and it won't hurt you," he said.
Moore balked, however, when the interviewer offered him a glass of Roundup and asked if he would drink it.
"I'm not stupid," Moore said, before again saying the product is "not dan- gerous to humans."
Moore said people who "try to commit suicide" by drinking the herbicide "fail regularly."
He then ended the inter- view.
The IARC news release said glyphosate "current-
ly has the highest global production volume of all herbicides."
"The agricultural use of glyphosate has increased sharply since the development of crops that have been genetical-
ly modified to make them resistant to glyphosate," the release said. "Glyphosate is also used in forestry, urban and home applications.
"Glyphosate has been detected in the air during
spraying, in water, and in food. The general popu- lation is exposed primari- ly through residence near sprayed areas, home use, and diet and the level that has been observed is generally low."
