UCLA is Now
Teaching Students
How To Pole Dance
By Victoria Snitsar, Campus Correspondent
Two official uni- versity divisions at UCLA teamed up to host an event Thursday which intro- duced students to the art of pole dancing.
The Sexploration Pole Art Class was hosted by the UCLA Sexual Health Coalition and UCLA Housing, according to the Facebook
event page. Organizers offered students the “chance to explore [their] inner-diva and divo” and “get introduced to the basic moves needed to become a mag- nificent pole dancer.”
The class was taught
by Candace Cane, a Los Angeles area “Exotic Aerialist” who told the Dai ly Bruin that she hoped atten- dees of her class would “gain more con- fidence in their appearance, because when you see yourself accomplishing something that you thought you couldn’t, it opens up a whole other world.”
One attendee, freshman biolo- gy student Elle Mendelson also told the Daily Bruin that “hav- ing a pole-danc- ing class avail- able to students gives them a way to take con- trol of the way they present themselves, and in that way peo- ple are able to take back the objectification.”
This isn't the
first time that UCLA has held such an event. In April 2018, the UCLA Sexual Health Coalition hosted a Sextravaganz a which includ- ed workshops on the topics of heel, chair, and pole dancing, as well as “under the stars” yoga.
With April being Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, several
schools have held their own “Sex Week” events, but many seem to have been focused not just on sexual assault preven- tion but on the exploration of sexual libera- tion.
Harvard University’s Sex Week, held ear- lier this month, featured
an event where attendees could
design and print their own dildos using a 3D print- er. Organizers warned that “printed designs are not intended for internal use.” Harvard’s Sex Weekend took place April 12- 15, and unlike UCLA’s was hosted by a stu- dent organiza- tion, Sex Week at Harvard.
