Who are 2021’s top landscapes and landscapers?
EARLIER THIS MONTH, Humphreys Landscaping took out the top Landscape of the Year 2021
award in this year’s Landscapes of Distinction Award, for its Herne Bay House entry, which also garnered several gold medals.
The annual awards, hosted by industry body Registered Master Landscapers New Zealand, attracted a record number of entries says Chief Executive Officer, Janine Scott: “We are thrilled by the level of interest this year, and pleased to see so many new entrants. In total, we received nearly 90 entries, which is 50% up on last year.
“We are also seeing an increase in the quality, scope, and uniqueness of the entries being submitted. Our industry is in good heart despite the challenges of the times and that is a tribute to the dedication and high standards of our members.”
The awards are independently judged by a panel of leading New Zealand landscape industry practitioners, each with their own speciality.
The judges called the top award-winning Herne Bay House “a triumph of engineering, construction, landscape technology, design, and plant management” and that its “truly demonstrates a high level of landscape design, engineering and technology, along with masterful gardening.”
In addition to the supreme Landscape of the Year award, this year’s premier award winners included Diva Landscapes’ entry for Arrowtown’s Lodge at the Hills (Garden Maintenance/Management Category), with special feature awards going to HEB

The 2021 People’s Choice Award
was awarded to Christchurch business Onlandscapes for its 40 Thorrington Road entry.
Another part of this annual festival of landscaping is the Prebble Seeds Young Landscaper of the Year Award, which this year has gone to Tama Ritter, with Outstanding Achievement awards for Hayden Parker (Leadership) and Ben Dyson (Excellence Innovation and PlaceMakers Profile/ Construction).
Tama is Ops Manager at Queenstown landscaping company Southern Landmarx, whose directors Jaye and Joe Nutting were happy to pay tribute to the “hard work and determination” shown by Tama in winning the national title.
The 2021 People’s Choice Award went to Onlandscapes.
“We’re all extremely proud of him after he came to us seven years ago knowing nothing about landscaping, but he’s worked his way up from an apprentice to the top.”
For his part, Tama says: “It was such a surprise to hear my name being called out and it still hasn’t really sunk in, to be honest.
“But I see it as confirmation of how far I have come in the industry, and it’s the cherry on top of all the hard work over the years.
“I love landscaping because it isn’t just one skillset, it’s such a wide variety of work. Each project has new and interesting challenges.”
