Autonomous mowers go upscale
SALES REPRESENTATIVE SOUTH ISLAND
OUTDOOR POWER EQUIPMENT INDUSTRY
ADDRESSING A CLEAR rise in
interest from professional users interested in saving man hours and/or making up for a skills shortage, Mean Green unveiled a line of commercial-scale autonomous electric mowers at the recent Green Industry & Equipment Expo in the US.
Mean Green’s flagship model is the EVO 74-inch ZTR mower, which is designed for autonomous large-area mowing and with applications in viticulture and horticulture.
Development partner The Kobi Company has brought to the party computer vision technology and Artificial Intelligence which means there are no issues operating under vines or close to buildings. The built-in computer also maps people, pets – anything that moves – to ensure a safe operating environment.
Fast charging and quiet operation lay the foundations for an 18- to 20-hour mowing day, with mowing status monitored via a smartphone app, which sends updates on progress, and other data on battery capacity, or when blades need sharpening.
The machines will go through final testing during 2020 and be ready for full production in 2021 with certification to the new ANSI/OPEI 60335-2-107-2019
OPE TECHNOLOGY
robotics standards.
Mean Green New Zealand’s Bruce
Scott is upbeat about local interest in autonomous mowing: “I’ve heard a lot of requests for autonomous machines over the past two years. I get a lot of ‘electric good, autonomous even better’, so the release
of this technology has created a lot of interest in the viticulture and horticultural industries.”
Bruce believes potential savings in terms of diesel and maintenance costs, and the ability to reallocate labour to more efficient tasks, could be “truly transformational”.
Plus, carbon emissions will “drop significantly”, he says, adding that the new machinery could be a “game-changer for operator health”.
