A colour forecast for 2022, a celebration of New Zealand’s top professional painters, new paint products and more.
VALSPAR’S COLOUR FORECAST for 2022 is “hopeful and optimistic while deftly reflecting our increased consciousness of our impact on the environment and what we surround ourselves with in our homes.”
Under the umbrella of its 2022 colour palette, Valspar (www. valsparpaint.nz) predicts a widespread desire for a home- living environment that represents an “an oasis of wellness” and reflects a general “yearning to connect with nature”.
Valspar’s four palettes (see photos on previous spread) comprise 16 natural, feelgood colours that represent a much needed “safe haven”.
1. SAFE HAVEN (colours: Sugar Lump; Mongolian Mist; Soothing; Castle Ruin)
Serene pale blue hues are balanced with whites, off-whites, and soft beige tones to create a sense of simplicity and peace.
When paired with subtle, tactile surfaces and textures the ambience is one of calm and relaxation, where we are invited to slow down, meditate, and find simple pleasures in the everyday.
2. TOGETHERNESS (colours: Flawless; Bare Bones; Settler Brown; Enigmatic)
Warm neutrals in ivory, greiges and browns create the perfect cocooning colour palette.
The deeper, richer brown hues can be matched to meaningful objects and artwork to achieve a perfectly balanced, soothing space.
Teamed with locally handcrafted objects, art, and sculpted feature walls, they “envelop us in comfort and beauty”.
Kiwis spend up on interiors
This year’s Houzz & Home New Zealand survey of 800+ respondents say New Zealand’s home renovation spend in 2020 grew nearly 13% to a median $18,000, from $16,000 in 2019.
In terms of motivation, 41% of home-bound homeowners reported that they had wanted to pursue a home renovation and finally had the time (the top renovation trigger, up 8%), while 30% said they had wanted to renovate for some time and finally had the financial means to do so.
Some 19% of homeowners had recently purchased or moved into a new home and wanted to customise it to fit their needs, while 17% said they were renovating to adapt to recent changes in lifestyle.
Most (78%) said they paid for their renos by cash while those who opted to finance their projects with credit cards (13%) fell by 10% compared to 2019.
With interior room renovations the most common projects (75% of those surveyed), making changes to kitchens were top of the list, with over half of homeowners making major changes.
The renovation market will continue through 2021, says the Houzz survey, with 44% of Kiwi homeowners planning to renovate this year.
