No let-up in quad bike scrutiny across Australasia
AUSTRALIA’S ACCC HAS
signalled in no uncertain terms that it would this year “focus on [the] implementation of important safety standards relating to quad bikes including preparing consumers and businesses for a mandatory requirement for operator protection devices.”
Said devices would be introduced in Australia as early as this October, says the ACCC, for whom this initiative is a top five priority.
“The ACCC will be focused on
ensuring compliance with a series of requirements which are already in
effect and importantly, also delivering educational initiatives about the second phase requirements that come into effect in October 2021.”
Closer to home, WorkSafe has fined Waikato farming company Tui Glen
Farms almost a quarter of a million dollars following a quad bike accident that proved fatal to a worker.
The subsequent investigation found that the quad bike in question rolled and fatally injured the user because it had incorrectly inflated tyres adding that the staff member had not been trained and instructed on how to check and maintain tyre pressure.
WorkSafe “strongly recommends” that farmers consider a side-by-side vehicle or ute as safer options than a quadbike for some jobs.
It also recommends that businesses consider installing crush protection devices (CPDs) on the back of quad bikes, in which respect WorkSafe is currently working with ACC on a cash back offer on CPDs.
