EXPAT KIWI, BRETT Avery, has joined the board of the UK’s Horticultural Trades
Association as Vice-President. Brett was the co-founder and Managing Director of Dyson vacuum distributor Avery Robinson for 17 years.
Having moved to the UK he worked for Savortex, before moving on to Farplants, one of one of the UK’s largest wholesale suppliers of outdoor plants to garden centres, four+ years ago as Managing Director.
Antony Smit
(left) is the new President of the Hire Industry Association of
New Zealand (HIANZ). HIANZ Board member and current COO of Hirepool, he was unanimously voted
to the position at a board meeting following the association’s AGM.
Antony succeeds Tim Mikkelsen. Ant Smit brings to his new role 20+ years’ experience in the hire industry including 10 as Hirepool’s Southern Regional Manager and prior to that experience in the event hire industry in the UK and New Zealand.
At an event at Eden Park, long-standing HIANZ President Tim Mikkelsen was presented with an appreciation trophy and a Mystery Break Weekend for him and partner Penny, as acknowledgement of their
many years of contribution to HIANZ (see photo bottom).

has been named
as the inaugural
Chief Executive of
the new national
polytechnic, the
NZ Institute of Skills & Technology (NZIST – see https://vocationaleducation.ac.nz/).
Helping shape and run this new national vocational education hub (based at
Wintec in Hamilton) are six Deputy Chief Executives (DCEs):
• Dr Angela Beaton (Delivery & Academic); Angela is currently GM National Women’s Health at Auckland DHB.
• Merran Davis (Transformation & Transition); Merran is currently the Interim CE of Unitec.
• Ana Morrison (Partnerships & Equity); Ana is currently the Executive Director – Strategic Partnerships & M ori Success at Toi Ohomai Institute of Technology.
• Vaughan Payne (Operations); Vaughan is currently CE of Waikato Regional Council.
• Warwick Quinn (Employer Journeys); Warwick is currently CE of BCITO.
• Tania Winslade (Learner Journey & Experience); Tania is currently the GM Māori Outcomes at Auckland Council. n
