Value of building work put in place (by quarter)
• Shops, Restaurants & Bars: $208 million (–41%).
Stats NZ notes that the values for both
the June and March 2020 quarters remain provisional and may be revised slightly with the next release in December.
JULY BUILDING CONSENTS
After June’s big rebound numbers, Stats NZ’s data for the July 2020 month has residential consents showing good value growth, in contrast to a somewhat stalled non-residential sector.
By value, consents for the July 2020 month were as follows:
• Residential: $1.4 billion (+5.1% on July
2019).
• Non-residential:$592million(–10.0%).
• Total: $2.1 billion (+2.1%).
By volume, multi-unit dwellings yet again boosted the residential numbers. Also noteworthy is the abnormally high volume of additions & alterations to standalone houses over the last three months (6,805 compared to an average of 5,403, the most since 1990).
In July, 3,391 new dwellings were consented, comprising:
• 1,938 standalone houses.
• 1,030 townhouses, ats & units. • 288 apartments.
• 135 retirement village units.
By value, consents YTD July 2020 were as follows:
• Residential: $15.7 billion (+3.6% on
YTD June 2019).
• Non-residential: $6.7 billion (–11.4%). • Total: $22.4 billion (–1.4%).
e only positive in non-residential consents, YTD July 2020, was a rise in the value of consents for education (+3.9%).
YTD by volume, the actual number of new dwellings consented was 37,585, +6.0% on the July 2019 year.
Around the regions, Wellington and Canterbury (+15% and +13% respectively) led volume growth, followed by Rest of South Island (+5.0%) and Auckland (+4.6%).
e building consent data for August is scheduled for release on 30 September.
e next data set to be released for the Value of building work put in place will be for the September 2020 quarter on 4 December.
