with a greater percentage of companies operating in this sector in the lower risk bands.
We will see how these pictures of risk in retailing and in construction develop over the next few weeks and months.

In the March 2020 month non- residential consents stalled big time: • Residential: $1.3 billion (–5.8% on
March 2019).
• Non-residential: $433 million
(–35.6%).
• Total: $1.7 billion (–15.5%).
By volume 2,904 dwellings were consented in the March 2020 month, –8.7% on March 2019, thanks certainly in part due to the Level 4 lockdown at the end of the month.
Looking at YTD March 2020, value and volume remain in the positive:
• Residential: $15.8 billion (+7.8% on
YTD March 2019).
• Non-residential: $7.1 billion (–0.4%).
• Total: $22.9 billion (+5.1%).
By volume YTD, 37,606 dwellings were consented in the March 2020 year, +9% on March 2019 but down slightly from 37,882 consents recorded in the February 2020 year.
More detail on the effects of COVID-19 on the construction industry will be provided by April 2020’s building consents, scheduled for 2 June, and the March quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place, scheduled for 8 June.
