The latest installation is a new environmental sustainability initiative – two beehives on the edge of the garden centre tended by a local apiarist who looks after the bees and hives with educational resources available for interested customers.
As previously covered in these pages, Mitre 10 MEGA Wanaka offers strong sustainability credentials. The team having set out with lofty sustainability goals, Mark Watson says they are learning how to operate the store to its maximum potential as they go.
In peak summertime, the solar array, passive ventilation, and other measures saw around 50% of the store’s energy use offset, while through the winter it averaged around 25%.
“We think this is a really positive result and place to be at this point. Ultimately, we have a fantastic store and now we just have to learn to use it really well and be very polished, practiced, and practical with the wonderful facility we have,” he says.
