“YTD August 2021’s 46,453 new homes consented surpassed the previous high set in 2021”
• Non-residential:$785million (+16.6%).
• Total: $2.7 billion (+28.5%).
By volume, 4,490 new dwellings were
consented in the month (+42.3% on August 2020), of which 49% were standalone houses, 42% townhouses, flats & units (up from 30% in July), 4% apartments and 6% retirement village units.
Year to date August 2021, consent values were as follows:
• Residential:$19.7billion(+25.4%on
YTD August 2020).
• Non-residential:$7.9billion(+14.8%). • Total: $27.1 billion (+28.5%).
In the year ended August 2021, 46,453 new dwellings were consented, +24% on the August 2020 year, led by Auckland (+34% on YTD August 2020) and Rest of North Island (+27%), with Canterbury +25%, Waikato +19% and Wellington +4.3%, with Rest of South Island +0.7%.
21,164 multi-unit homes (townhouses, flats & units, apartments and retirement village units) were consented in YTD August 2021, +35% on the previous August year, while the number of new standalone houses was +16%.
In the year ended August 2021, the number of new dwellings consented per 1,000 residents was 9.1, compared with 7.4 in the August 2020 year.
YTD August 2021, growth in the value of non-residential building consents was driven by education buildings (+28%) and factories (+54%) and offices, administration & public transport buildings (+10%).
Stats NZ’s September 2021 building consent data is released on 2 November, with the September quarter’s Value of Building Work put in Place scheduled for release on 6 December.
