WITH THE USE of cordless tools
growing exponentially, STIHL NZ has set a programme in place to offer a battery recycling programme.
Aimed at preventing up to 100 tonnes of STIHL Lithium-ion batteries from ending up in landfills within the next five years, STIHL is wearing the cost for Kiwi customers to bring in old batteries for recycling.
STIHL customers can bring batteries from their STIHL tools free of charge to one of the 73 Nationwide STIHL SHOPs who will take care of
recycling up to 95% per
cent of each individual
battery.
Jochen Speer, (right) Managing Director
at STIHL New Zealand, says consumers are becoming more conscious of battery disposal but do not have the option of doing so safely themselves.
“STIHL has solved the logistical obstacles for customers who want to do good but don’t necessarily have the tools to do it.
“Now they can bring their old STIHL batteries into their local store and have peace of mind the disposal will not be harming the environment.
“As an added bonus, we’ll cover the cost, so it isn’t hurting our customer’s pockets to be kind to the environment. It’s a cost we’re prepared to carry because we think Kiwis will appreciate what we’ve done
in providing a seamless programme that invites them to do their bit,” he says.

Elsewhere, US outdoor power industry
peak organisation the OPEI has just formed a working group to create actionable steps to resolve issues around the transportation/recycling of high energy batteries (>300Wh).
Says OPEI: “As the industry continues to shift into larger format battery applications, the need to properly care for these batteries at the end-of-life grows as well.
“Today’s transportation regulations limit end users to easily ship these batteries back to manufacturers or potential recycling partners unless they drop off the batteries directly with certified shipping vendors.”
