MEASURES TO IMPROVE QUAD BIKE SAFETY COMING
QUAD BIKE SAFETY is in the
spotlight again, but in a positive way.
Said to account for a third of all deaths on farms, enforceable measures to reduce the risk of driving a quad bike appear to now be in the works.
Worksafe NZ having changed its
position last year to recommend roll bars
for quads, MBIE has recently confirmed
in the media that proposals to change
health & safety legislation for work
machinery and vehicles are being finalised, with a spokesperson saying that ministerial decisions will be made early next year.
And with good reason: ACC says that it receives over 1,000 claims for work-related quad bike accidents every year and that it is also now recommending that crush protection devices are installed on all quad bikes that are used for work.
ACC now states on its website: “We’re working with WorkSafe NZ to help reduce injuries and fatalities caused by quad bikes, to ensure workers go home safe to their whanau at the end of every day.”
Interestingly, to do its part in encouraging the raising of quad bike safety levels, ACC is currently offering people who are self-employed or own a small-to-medium-sized farming business (0-99 employees), a cashback offer on crush protection devices for quad bikes.

GEOFF WEBB, OWNER of Aoraki Tree & Scrub Control, is on a mission to eliminate wilding
pine, which is a huge problem in the Mackenzie region
Wilding pine is rapidly spreading through New Zealand’s high country, threatening ecosystems and iconic landscapes in its path.
Across New Zealand, wilding pine covers 1.8 million hectares of land and is growing at a rate of 5% year on year. As it grows, it colonises and out-competes for space with native species. It doesn’t provide food for native birds and insects, and their needles create an acidic layer that discourages regeneration causing native animals to flee the forest areas.
Geoff Webb says wilding pine is invading 90,000 hectares each year throughout New
Zealand and the key is to act fast.
To achieve this quick response, Aoraki
Tree & Scrub Control uses Husqvarna. “Husqvarna has proven itself as the tool
up to the challenge. It starts and runs every time, and the machines are running all day every day, five days a week” says Geoff, who finds Husky outdoor power tools easy to use with high comfort and ergonomics and high quality.
But it’s not just about machinery: Geoff Webb says it’s also about the first-class backup service he gets from his local dealer, Dixon Machinery of Methven which has determined why Geoff chose Husqvarna for the job.
Talking of Dixon Machinery, operator Paul Dixon just announced his retirement – see page 4.
