                                                         Bumper GARDENA
product release
Following on from the launch of its first robotic lawnmower (the R80Li) last year, GARDENA’s new SILENO City (above) is designed for urban lawns of up to 250m2. Offering premium features such as a SensorCut system, safety sensors and anti-theft protection, quiet running (58dbA), SILENO City handles lawn inclines of up to 25%, will mow in most weather conditions and can be hosed out for easy cleaning.
Boundary and guide wire help the mower to orientate and mowing times can either be set manually or calculated by the mower. An installation assistant aids set-up and other online resources are provided. Comes with a two-year warranty.
Also new is a range of easily programmable, German-made water timers, starting with the Flex water control featuring very flexible water duration settings, the Select water control (set up three different irrigation schedules) and the Master water control, which allows up to six different watering plans, and can also be connected to the Water Distributor. A “water now” function starts irrigation manually without needing to disconnect from the tap or change settings. Comes with a two- year warranty.
Also new is the GARDENA Liano Hose that’s designed to navigate corners without kinking or twisting, is UV and frost- resistant, free of phthalates and heavy metals and comes with a 30-year warranty.
On top of all this there are two new GARDENA Lawn Spreaders (a hand spreader and a spreading
roller, featuring ergonomic
designs and easy dosage adjustment), new non-slip and water-repellent Gardening and Soil Gloves (made of washable, non-toxic materials) and a new wall-mounting 30m Retractable Hose Reel with 180° swivel, reliable retraction mechanism
and secure hose guide for controlled rewinding without twisting or knotting.

 Kingfisher ousts metaldehyde,
despite UK backtracking
Even though the UK’s High Court recently overturned the proposed Europe-wide ban on metaldehyde, pan-European DIY giant Kingfisher says it will continue with its plan to replace products containing the organic compound commonly used as a pesticide against slugs and snails with environmentally-friendly alternatives.
Kingfisher Head of Range, Garden, Tim Clapp, explains: “Metaldehyde can cause significant harm to wildlife and pollutes our waters. By upholding our decision to remove it completely, we continue to make it easier for our customers to create healthy homes that are free from harmful chemicals.”
Kingfisher has introduced chemical-free alternatives with
its Safe By Nature range including copper tape (a natural slug repellent) and wool mats and pellets which are rough on slug feet.
The range has been developed to be just as effective as chemical products, whilst providing additional environmental benefits, such as releasing nutrients into the soil and protecting plants from weeds.
Other products include slug traps, imitation wasp nests and improved sonic repellers.

 Palmers opens Petone store
The 14th Palmers site opened in August on Victoria Street, Petone, offering the brand’s usual mix of garden and lifestyle, along with a broad selection of house plants and a Café Botannix, Palmers’ in-house café brand.
With 1,000m2 of retail and 1,600m2 of garden centre, along with BBQs, outdoor furniture and spa pools, it’s interesting to note that the new Petone store is another to feature a curated range of battery powered/cordless STIHL outdoor power products for smaller gardens.
Four years in the making, the project was delayed by a year thanks to additional strengthening being required to the former IBM warehouse now occupied by Palmers Petone.
