ERA decision may have wider implications
THE ONGOING SAGA of hourly rates between Jacks Hardware & Timber (Mitre 10 MEGA Dunedin and Mitre 10 Mosgiel) and FIRST Union was resolved towards the end of June by the Employment Relations Authority (ERA), which imposed a living wage that improves the lot of FIRST Union members at these stores.
In a letter to staff, Jacks owner, Martin Dippie, says: “We are pleased with the outcomes of the ERA decision and feel that it was a fair compromise between us and the Union” and goes on to reassure staff that their jobs are secure.
But there are wider implications for retailers around the country.
Indeed, FIRST Union Secretary, Tali Williams, says: “Given now living wages are endorsed by [the] chairman of [the] Mitre 10 board, we are calling on the living wage to be paid to all Mitre 10 staff across the country.”
