 BCITO adds to
carpentry resources
With the threat of losing their remit still hanging over vocational trainers, BCITO, New Zealand’s largest provider of construction trade apprenticeships, launched a new set of resources
for apprentice carpenters and their employers in June.
BCITO launched the resources to support businesses delivering the
New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry, adding value by giving the apprentices guides to health & safety, environmental legislation and consumer protection best practice, as well as the core skills, tools and planning materials.
This year is the first time the carpentry certificate it is being delivered in the workplace with the full resourcing required to translate theory into practice. The programme allows apprentices
to undertake at home review and represents the most up to date learning material for the modern workplace environment.
BCITO Chief Executive, Warwick Quinn, says the additional resources are another example of the industry “doing what it does best, training apprentices and providing them with the real-world, hands-on experience they need to become successful tradespeople.”

It’s in the bag...
SINGLE-USE PLASTIC shopping bags were banned from 1 July but the Government says that even last year New Zealanders appeared to have made a rapid transition to reusable bags.
Indeed, according to research done for the Ministry for the Environment, 56% of shoppers in April last year brought their own reusable bags this number increasing by September to 91% of shoppers who said they always/often bring their own reusable bag.
Businesses were given six months
ahead of the ban to phase-out single- use plastic bags, but for those which are not compliant, there is a section on the Ministry for the Environment’s website
where people can report businesses that are still giving out single-use plastic bags after the ban takes effect.

The NZCB Apprentice Challenge is supported by ITAB (Industry Training Association Building), while prizes for the national final were kindly provided by ITM, Noel Leeming, Winstone Wallboards, PlaceMakers and others.
