“Didn’t you say you wanted to go to Victoria Harbor yesterday, come on.”
Finally, Su Qing wore a black chiffon floral skirt and sneaked out of her aunt’s home.
That afternoon on the streets of Causeway Bay, Jason takes her by the hand as he moves through the crowd towards safety. Su Qing felt both frightened and curious. This was the first time she had left the small southern town where she had grown up. She didn’t expect to go through so many unex- pected things. That day, Su Qing’s nose tingled with the fumes of tear gas, and she saw the police keeping the city safe. The helicopter was buzzing around the roof. The rioters on the road singing merrily under other countries’ flags makes her feel ridiculous.
But what impressed Su Qing the most on that day was Jason holding her hand tight in danger, the Victoria Harbor with its golden veil in the sunset, and the pendant that Jason gave her, a necklace shaped like a compass. Jason said that this necklace is called “fortunes”. As long as the graphicsin- side rotates, it can bring good luck for Su Qing.
She couldn’t look straight into Jason’s eyes as he said goodbye to her in the sunset that day, just like the necklace in her hands right now.
They all shine with fascination.
