Page 20 - SB-Little Prince
P. 20

I don’t know if you realize this but feelings of embarrassment and anger are first cousins. They both are caused by overuse of Should, Ought or Must beliefs. If you say to yourself, “My teammate should shoot the basketball better than that,” you will be angry with them. If you say, “I should shoot the basketball better than that,” you will be embarrassed.
In both cases, you are making unrealistic demands on others or yourself. You (they) shot the basketball as well as you (they) could and it missed. It is not the end of the world but you can get mighty upset about it. You can get so upset that you act ugly to others or get so frustrated with yourself that you quit trying to succeed, at basketball or math or even at making new friends.
1. When the Prince shot poorly and everyone laughed at him, what should or ought statements did he tell himself?
2. What were his emotions?
3. What did he do (behavior) because of this thinking?
4. What eventually happened because of the Prince’s behavior in the story?
