P. 42

Worksheet
This worksheet deals with human interaction and the role the Demandingness played. It is easy to identify the Prince’s irrational thinking, “No one should laugh at me because I’m the Prince.” Your children can easily identify the Not OK emotion of anger. The Prince’s Thumbs Down behavior in this example was that he brakes and then banished all the bows and arrows in the kingdom.
When we interact with other people, our pets, our teachers and they don’t meet our “Should” expectations, we can “banish” them. “They should want to sit and eat with me in the cafeteria and not with their new friend.”
We may do things against our best self-interest because some people don’t meet our “Should requirements.” “The teacher should not have given me so much homework over the weekend, I just won’t do it.” You fail to complete your school work all because of the “Shoulds.”
The real problem with this type of thinking is that sometimes... Demandingness works. The friend will sit with you in the cafeteria for fear of making you angry. The teacher may give less homework because the Demandingness caused parents to complain.
The last question on this page, “What eventually happened because of the Prince’s behavior in the story?” gives children an opportunity to discuss the consequences to Demandingness.
