Smartest’s next lesson was the one that was always my favorite... food recognition... what was good to eat and what was not so good to eat.
With crows, it was corn and grapes and tomatoes and berries and just about everything. Crows have a varied diet and eat just about anything. Our crow recognition classes are long because there is so much material to cover.
So, when Smartest started his lecture and I heard the topic “food recognition,” I settled back for a full day of him saying things like, “Only eat corn that is yellow, not green, eat red tomatoes instead of green ones, black berries not red ones” and on and on.
To my surprise, Smartest said only one word, “Mice.” Then he showed the class what mice looked like and began describing their various colors and shapes.
Immediately, Fraid started complaining, “Whole mice, live mice, I don’t think so. I like my food already prepared in small bite size bits. It has always been that way and there is no reason to change.
This hunting and catching and then eating mice seems like a lot of foolishness to me. None of us have ever had to do anything like this and we have done just fine. You will just have to find some other type of food for us.”
