The 3rd man had some of the some of same initial beliefs as the other men but then he controlled his thinking and was able to come
up with more rational beliefs, developed a plan and stuck with it. This is one of the key concepts in Coping Skills to understand... “If you control your thinking, you can have better control of your emotions and behaviors and therefore Your Life.”
Each man was confronted by a bear (bad situation) so the A Activating event was the same.
What was different about the three men was what they told themselves about the situation. The third man’s Beliefs about the Situation determined how he handled it.
What were some things the third man told himself? “This is really bad. What should I do?”
What were the emotions C of the third man? A little scared and a little angry.
What were the behaviors C of the third man? He played dead and got away.
Because he was not telling himself things that were irrational (things that did not make sense), he was able to come up with alternative responses to a “not so good” situation. The response he was able to think of was specific to that situation.
Many times, we continue to respond the same way to similar situation, when a different response would be more effective. This is because our behavior becomes conditioned to our “Not OK” emotions. We keep doing the same thing over and over even when the resulting consequences are not to our liking.
