P. 26

Worksheet
The second character of this story illustrates a very common response to “Grizzly Bear” situations... those that they find threatening. These could be as simple as asking a question in a school classroom and not be related to any real “danger” in the situation. It is important to recognize the thinking that is responsible for the emotions and behaviors of the second man as they can cause a life time of problems.
Each man was confronted by a bear (bad situation) so the “A” Activating Event was the same.
What was different about the three men was what they told themselves about the situation. Second man’s “B” Beliefs about the situation determined how he handled it.
What did the second man tell himself? “This is the worst thing that could ever happen to me”
What were the emotions C of the second man? Scared
What were the behaviors C of the second man? Ran away
Once again, if time permits, let them see the real world similarity to the story so that they can begin the process of generalizing to their real lives. You can ask,
“Are there ever times when you behave like this man?”
Let them give you examples from the playground or home. Determine which of these examples to use.
When you acted (use their examples) what were you thinking? What were you feeling? (guide them to be realistic)
How did you behave? (help them to see the thumbs down behavior)
