It is very easy to make ourselves uncomfortable around strangers or people who look or sound different than us. Fraid did not seem to understand that he was making himself uncomfortable because the other owls looked different.
The fact that they looked different was not a good reason to be scared.
When Fraid was told he had to stay up at night, he complained and said it was not fair. He was being asked to do something he had not done before and he became scared. He even said that “It has lots of shadows and strange noises.”
He let himself have scary thoughts and tried to convince everyone that they could get just as much food in the daytime. Do you think he was trying to justify his unwillingness to stay out in the dark?
Sometimes we try to convince others that our Stinky Thinking makes sense. If the others had agreed with Fraid, he would have been able to convince himself he was right even though there was no evidence to prove it.
Smartest knew that if any of the young owls, who might be scared of the dark, stayed out all night, they would realize that their fear was unjustified. But if Smartest gave in and let them go home and not stay out all night, they would become even more fearful.
