They don’t have to be really big fears but just big enough to cause you to regret that your were “afraid to try.” The thinking involved in your “thumbs down behaviors” (not in your best self-interest) have their beginnings in childhood.
This fable is designed to help you and your child have a conversation about being “scared”. Not the valuable fear of high places or snakes but of normal social interactions, school expectations and unfamiliar people or situations.
“What is the worst that could happen” is the
self-talk question you want your child to use when
they begin to experience anxiety. Help them learn to realistically make this evaluation and then follow through by “confronting their fear.”
As you will recall from the story, Carmen Cat told herself that she might drown in the puddle or maybe there would be an alligator in it. That is typical of childhood “Stinky Thinking” and teaching your child to have “Good Thinking” may help them not be a “scaredy cat” later in their life.
