Page 28 - Ugly Unicorn
P. 28
In the story, the ancient horses grew so tired of the unicorns’ behavior that they banished them to an island. All of the horses noted how nice it was to be rid of the gossiping, manipulative unicorns.
Then one day, there was a rumbling sound from Unicorn Island and then an explosion that destroyed the island and all of the unicorns. Your child will recognize the volcanic eruption, but the horses explained, “Today it seems that even their island has had enough of their gossiping and hateful behaviors.”
You know adults who engage in “Unicorn Behavior” and you may avoid them. But do you think this started when they were adults or in childhood? Most of our good as well as bad traits start long before we understand the long-term consequences. By helping children understand this problem some may not engage in Unicorn Behavior. By helping children understand that they should not encourage or accept it, they can aid in curtailing this behavior in others.
