The Peddler reached into a bag he had brought along and took out five apples. He placed them on a table in front of the King and asked the King which of the apples was good to eat. The King laughed, “How absurd! Three of the apples are black and therefore not good and two are white and therefore good.” “Would your majesty please bite each of the apples,” asked the Peddler.
The King did so in turn, biting each apple in the order laid before him by the Peddler. The first black apple was so hard the King could not even get his teeth into it. “See, it is no good” said the King. “Please continue,” said the courteous Peddler and the King did so. The second black apple was still hard but the King was able to bite off a piece.
“Oh, it’s tart,” said the King making a face. “What is all of this going to prove?” “Patience,” said the Peddler, “all will be revealed shortly, so please continue.” The third apple, although black, was pleasantly soft and very tasty. “How unusual,” commented the King.
The fourth apple, which was white, had a wonderful texture and was sweet. “I knew it would be good,” said the King. “The white apples are always perfect.” “Then please bite the fifth apple which is also white,” said the Peddler.
