COSMOS EXPLAINS MOUSY MOUSE HAS A BAD DAY
The habit of comparing ourselves to others and overvaluing the opinion of others can lead us into causing ourselves much disappointment and unhappiness. Mousy Mouse is a typical youngster in her community, much like you. She has the ability to make herself happy or sad. She can be nice to her friends or be mean to them. But the main quality that comes out in this story is Mousy’s habit of “comparison shopping.”
In this story, “comparison shopping” means to compare ourselves to others or to unrealistic expectations and to overvalue the opinion of others. This comparison habit is very common in children.
In our story, Mousy starts her first day of school in her best checked dress and best shoes. She thinks she looks good (which she probably does) and leaves for school in a good mood. On her way to school she meets two friends, one who has new shoes and another who has a new dress.
Since Mousy is a “comparison shopper,” she immediately tells herself this: “My clothes and shoes look terrible and everyone will make fun of me.” She arrives at school feeling embarrassed and angry. When a friend tells her she looks fine, she thinks, “He is just saying that and it is not true. He really thinks I look stupid and he doesn’t know anything anyway!” She then says some hurtful things to her friend because of her Stinky Thinking. Mousy maintains this negative thinking despite what anyone says (such as complimenting her clothes or shoes) and she has a VERY BAD DAY.
