CHAPTER 8 Vietnam... Yeah, Did That...
When we arrived in Saigon, I remembered getting off the plane and it was 110 degrees and I started sweating. I don’t think I stopped until I got back on the plane to leave. We were in Saigon for an audition which performers were required to do in order to tour the country. So many bad groups had come to Vietnam it was necessary to weed them out. Regardless of background, all performers had to audition when they got to the country, where they were rated. And it wasn’t just a song or two. We had to do our whole show for them, but we received the highest ratings anyone could get.
Everything was backwards there in those days. In the ratings, ten was considered horrible while one was the best. The rating score we earned translated into $1,000 a show and some days we did six or seven shows a day. We were playing Top 40 songs and some country music, primarily a variety of music like we had done before.
