Been There... Done That!
CHAPTER 12
“I Can Do That, Watch Me!”
Robert C. Knievel was not for beginners. What I mean by that is, he was as much a jerk at times as he was a hero for the rest of the time. One thing for sure, whoever did business with him was going to lose. I have yet to find anyone who did well dealing with Evel. He had the nerve not only for jumping motorcycles but once he traded a leased limousine into a dealership. When I asked him how he could do that, he said, “Because I’m Evel Knievel.” I first met Evel in our office in Beverly Hills when he had just about recovered from his ill-fated jump at Caesars Palace. He was walking around with no shirt and I wondered how he could have that many scars from a surgery in 1968 and still be alive. He said, “Don’t worry about it, I’m still here, so no problem.” My manager, John Herring, was trying to do some things for him, but it wasn’t going well. John asked me if I could take Evel to the airport, I told him I could but was in a hurry.
