Been There... Done That!
I did was give them some guitars that were disabled and show them how to fake it. I put a Mexican girl, Rosita, on the drums and believe it or not, through rehearsals she was actually starting to play. Gayle, Marcello and Robin were getting good at chit chat from the stage.
I told Voss and Ray we were as ready as we were going to be because they were singing well and starting to work off of each other. Maybe while they were working, they could take some lessons, but in the meantime, I thought people would be distracted by their appearance if you know what I mean. Voss had purchased a Nightclub on Broadway and told me that’s where he wanted them to work. We rehearsed them at the Off Broadway at night because Voss and Ray didn’t want anybody to see them until opening night. They came on stage in classy outfits, which, although topless, looked expensive. Opening night went off without a hitch to more than a packed house. After the show, when I was going out the door, Voss handed me an envelope. I later counted it and found $15,000 inside with a note that said, “Good job.” (See Photo Page 64)
From there we ended up going to Kansas City and working at a club called The Inferno, run by the mob. They paid great, but I hated the name of the club. I remember that it was soon renamed P.J.’s Inferno. That wasn’t all that great either, but what was I going to do? One thing about it was the club’s neon sign they had only lit up the name “P.J.’s, and that was what people called it. We packed that son of a bitch. But I wanted to find a lead guitar player, so we left Kansas City and went back to the Casablanca and worked there until the spring of 1967 when Bob told me he would soon be available.
