Been There... Done That!
Keith left. It took exercising my ankle religiously two to four hours a day for a month before I was back up walking around without any limp, just a little bit of discomfort and I could feel that going away.
It was time to get back to making music, so I called a guy I knew in Miami, inquiring about openings for the winter season. He said he knew somebody in the Bahamas who would hire me on the spot, based on my reputation and nightclub experience. I thought it might be a long shot, but I got on a plane with my scrapbook and guitar and flew to Miami and then on to the Bahamas. The place I went to about the gig was called The Joker’s Wild in Freeport and as I entered I heard a loud rock band playing that wasn’t very good.
I found the man I was looking for, bought him a drink and we talked for a bit. He said he wanted to see my stuff, but I didn’t have my scrapbook with me. When I brought it the next day, he asked if I had my band with me and I said no, they were waiting back in San Francisco. Peter Noone, of Herman’s Hermits, was there and vouched for us. After talking money, the club owner said, “Sounds good, you start next week.”
Frantically, I got on the phone trying to get hold of Keith and when I reached him, I told him, “I’m in the Bahamas and we have a gig here and I’ll ship you the money tomorrow for airfare or go prepay it or whatever you want to do. But you are going to have to bring a bass player with you.” The two of them got in that Friday and we had to start on Tuesday and even though it was put together quickly, it was good. Soon people were standing in line to get in, but I stayed busy trying to get us other bookings. I really wasn’t
