You know, when I was watching what was being said by
Red Tail and Fuzzy Tail about Squiggy, I had an interesting thought. I asked myself, “Are they just kidding? Do they really believe what they are saying?” Then I realized what was happening. The more they told the story, the more “real” it became to them.
Now, take Fuzzy Tail for example. I had never seen him be particularly mean to others. In fact, he seemed very shy. He was quiet and did not interact or play a lot with the others. Then this talk about Squiggy’s causing bad luck was started by Red Tail. I noticed that a lot of the other squirrels would gather around Red Tail and listen to him talk about how they would have no food.
One of those listening was Fuzzy Tail. Then Fuzzy Tail started telling them about the “mark of the hawk” and crowds gathered around him. All of a sudden Fuzzy Tail became really popular. His story became more and more scary as the others got more and more upset. I recognized a change in Fuzzy Tail. The more often he told his story, the more Fuzzy Tail believed it to be true.
