If you don’t speak up when others are showing prejudice, you are just as much at fault as they are for being prejudice. Prejudice can only exist if we allow the Stinky Thinking of others to influence us and if we don’t say or do anything to stop it. But prejudice can influence more than just how we treat each other.
For example; if the only reason you don’t like a class (spelling) is because it is difficult, you are being prejudiced. If the only reason you don’t like a particular teacher is that he or she expects you to do your work correctly, you are being prejudiced. If the only reason you don’t like a classmate is that they choose not to play a game you want to play, you are being prejudiced.
Prejudice toward Squiggy was obviously very hurtful for him. The others were so ugly to him that he moved away. But what happened after he left the colony of squirrels?
They were just as ugly to those who had the wrong eye color or a "too short" tail. If someone was different, they also had to leave the colony of squirrels. Once we allow our Stinky Thinking to go unchallenged and allow prejudice to occur, it spreads and hurts more and more of us.
It hurts those who the prejudice is against but it also hurts those who are prejudiced. If you are prejudiced against a teacher just because she demands you do your best, you may convince yourself that you don’t like school. You may quit trying to succeed in all of your classes.
