My cousins said that they play games and have contests all week. They all seem to have a great time during the festival. My cousins and I watched them from the branches in a tall tree on the edge of the playground.
The colony gets their chocolate by rummaging through the trash each day for half-eaten candy bars and the like. They take the candy to their special storage place and keep it until the festival.
Some of the more adventurous squirrels sneak into a picnicker’s basket and come out with an unopened candy bar and rush it to the special storage place.
I had never heard of this festival before but my cousins told me that this colony of squirrels has one each year.
No one knew why the Chocolate Festival tradition started but it had been going on for as long as anyone could remember. Some said that it was to thank the trees for giving enough nuts for the winter.
Others thought it had something to do with a magical way of keeping away the hawks (the squirrels’ most deadly enemy). Whatever the reason, everyone looked forward to the Chocolate Festival a week of chocolate feasting.
