Page 24 - SB-Collard Green Garden
P. 24

Like the other characters, the Young Girl could have shown Good Thinking with the Bull and things would have turned out differently. The Bull was threatening her because he wanted the garden to stay the same. The Young Girl did not know what the Bull might or could do but she made herself very frightened. Because she imagined the worst, she did nothing, which was exactly what the Bull wanted. You may find yourself in similar situations. Someone may try to keep you from doing or not doing something by threatening you. More than likely, you are going to imagine terrible consequences and you might make a decision based on your fear instead of reality.
When you are really scared, it is time to talk sense to yourself. Ask yourself, “What is the worst thing that could happen?” Most of the time the “Worst” is something you can deal with and your fear will be less or may go away entirely. The important thing is to be realistic. This may mean that you need to talk with a trusted adult about the situation. If their advice seems like Good Thinking, then follow their advice.
1. What more realistic thing could the Young Girl have told herself about the Bull’s threat?
2. With this Good Thinking, what emotions would she have then felt after the Bull’s threat?
3. What then would have been her behavior toward changing the garden?
