Cosmos suggested that the Young Girl should consider what might really happen, not what she feared might happen and then decide what she should do. You should use this same method to make your decisions. Your decision in a fearful situation might be to leave, stand firm, compromise or to attack. The correct way to deal with a problem situation will depend on your ability to put your Stinky Thinking aside and evaluate your choices.
You should look beyond your fears and concerns to the motives of others when they are trying to get you to do something you think is wrong. It is apparent in the story that the three negative characters have bad motives. They do not have the Young Girl’s interest in mind when they try to influence her into not changing the garden. Their motives and their Stinky Thinking may be easily recognized in this story.
Unfortunately, it is more difficult for you to recognize manipulation or accept that someone is trying to manipulate you when it occurs with friends and family. This story and this next exercise will introduce skills which can be used throughout your life. But “Knowing” is not “Doing.” You need to practice these skills every chance you get. As Cosmos said as he began his flight farther south, “What will I find in your garden next year?”
