Now I am sure that all of you know that frogs can sing. On just about any pond on any summer’s night, they are just singing away. They know countless songs and can harmonize in the most beautiful way. But to be honest, I had never heard any newt
sing so the contest seemed kind of silly. But that did not stop needy Newton.
On the night of the contest, the moonlight was filled with the deep sounds of frog song. I am not easy to impress, being a world traveler and all but it was quite beautiful.
Then everything went totally quiet (it was Newton’s turn). And from the water’s edge came a thin, tinny sounding squeak, coming out of the throat of Newton. The entire forest filled with laughter and the contest was over.
After the song contest, several of the frogs spoke to Newton. Although I could not hear all of the conversation, they were telling him that they did not want to have any more contests. That frogs love games and sport but these contests were being held for the wrong reasons.
The frogs explained that they understood that Newton wanted to impress the other newts by winning these contests. The frogs then told him that they thought that his need to impress the others was a bad idea. They said that he might get hurt and that the other newts were just making fun of him.
