Page 14 - SB-Newton and the Needy Newts
P. 14
It seemed to me that the frogs gave Newton some good advice. He was not doing what was in his best self-interest because he wanted the attention of others. Think about all the foolish or
dangerous things you have done ... just to impress others.
You may not listen to the good advice of others and consequently do things that you know are foolish and might cause problems. Unfortunately, Newton was not able to follow through with the frogs advice. I think that Newton understood that they were being truthful and really wanted to help him. He may have even understood that he had foolishly been telling himself that he needed the attention and approval of others.
For a while, he stopped trying to impress the other newts. He stopped doing foolish things to get the attention from others. He even stopped challenging the frogs to contests. I thought that he was going to stop all this neediness.
Then I noticed that he seemed kind of nervous and was asking the others newts if he looked good or if he was smart or quick and things like that. But the more he tried to get the others to notice him, the more anxious he became.
One morning, I happened to be sitting on a low branch. I noticed that Newton was right below me. He was talking to himself. He seemed particularly upset, so I paid close attention to what he was saying.
