In you effort to help your child develop Coping Skills, you will be looking for examples of tolerance, acceptance and compassion. These are the qualities that are absent in the presence of prejudice.
Consequently, if you observe your child accepting someone that they may have excluded in the past or being tolerance of other’s somewhat annoying behaviors or being helpful without any expectation of reward, you are seeing behaviors incompatible with the true definition of prejudice.
You may recognize these behaviors as “being nice” but it is more than that, if these behaviors or occurring outside of a child’s normal “comfort zone”. If you see your child associating with others who would normally be excluded or being tolerant when they would normally be angry and would complain, they are demonstrating a positive change in attitude.
Encourage and reinforce the qualities of tolerance, acceptance and compassion. Insist that your child recognize and challenge “Chocolate Festival” irrational (stinky thinking in themselves and others. Your efforts in these areas will go a long way to reduce their prejudice toward others now and in the future.
